A group of smiling people outdoors enjoying a sunny day. Three trishaws with red covers are carrying elderly passengers, accompanied by volunteers wearing helmets and high-visibility vests. A man in a wheelchair sits nearby, also smiling. Trees and a picnic area can be seen in the background.

S1E59 P&P Ryan Foster. Bringing Joy to Seniors with Cycling Without Age

Imagine gliding through the sunshine on a trishaw. The wind on your face. Laughter in the air. For seniors and people with disabilities, this isn’t just a ride. It’s a lifeline. Ryan Foster shares how Cycling Without Age Brisbane is changing lives by bringing the simple joy of bike riding to those who thought they’d never experience it again.

Cycling Without Age started in Denmark and has spread to 46 countries, connecting communities through specialised trishaws that allow seniors to feel the freedom of the open road. Ryan talks about the highs and lows of setting up Brisbane’s chapter. He reveals what it’s like to navigate challenges like COVID lockdowns and the Brisbane floods of 2022.

You’ll hear about the practical side of making it work. Securing grants. Training volunteers. Keeping the wheels rolling. But the real story is in the transformations. Like the woman in her 90s who hadn’t been outside for years but now looks forward to every ride. Or the veteran volunteer who found a new sense of purpose pedalling through parks and sharing stories.

Ryan’s passion for combating social isolation and fostering community connection shines through every word. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering or starting something meaningful in your own community, Ryan’s journey is proof it can be done.

Learn how a simple idea, some determination, and a lot of heart can transform lives one ride at a time.

Ready to pedal towards a better community? Tune in and be inspired.

This is our final episode for 2024. Have a great Christmas and New Year and look out for us next year with our new name Get Around Caboolture. We already have great episodes lined up for January.

Get Around Cabo Carfree is a community movement advocating for more transport options for people in Caboolture and Morayfield who can’t drive – and that is more than 4 in 10 people (a surprising not-so-fun fact about our town – check the About page for details). Our podcast has 3 broad topics.

Road Rules 360 (RR360) cohosted with John Burrill, former TMR subject matter expert for Qld’s road rules. We discuss the road rules for people riding a bike, walking, in a wheelchair or on a scooter or other personal mobility device (PMD).

Not Everyone Drives (NED) are conversations with people who don’t drive for any reason. They may have a disability, on medication, strapped for cash, too young, too old, unlicensed or they had a collision and now they’re too scared (you might be surprised why a person can’t drive and how the lack of alternatives impacts their daily living). This one’s for policymakers to understand the implications for their decisions.

People & Projects (P&P) are for transport advocates and people who are curious to hear what’s happening globally and locally. These are interviews with academics, advocates and community group leaders.

If you’d like to be on our show for one of these topics, please go to the Contact page and complete the form.

Get Around Cabo Carfree is a community movement advocating for more travel options for people in
Caboolture & Morayfield.

Our Goals

1. All children can ride to school on safe streets

2. All young adults can get to work or study without needing a car so they begin adulthood without a debt of $15,000 a year.

A lack of transport options leads to a high financial burden for
families, businesses and governments.

The only way we can be sustainable for the long term is with your help.
